Next Generation Parachute
SPELCO, the Special Parachute and Logistics Consortium, is a joint venture between o German companies. The group is working to develop the Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System, which is an engine-less, electronic guidance system with heads-up display navigation. The human gliding device allows for a person to jump from a plane or other object at speeds of 60 mph and assist in gliding to the ground and stop using a parachute. The consortium will eventually modify the current system so that it can land by itself. The Gryphon is being developed for high-altitude, high-opening jump missions. It has 6 foot wings that provide maneuverability with a glide ratio of 5:1; meaning if a user starts at an altitude of 5 miles, they glide for 25 miles. The addition of a small engine would increase the system's range and speed. The system has a span of 1,800 mm, a length of 1,500 mm, and a weight of 50 kg.
