Brain Simulator
Researchers at a multinational computer and IT corporation have created the largest brain simulation to date; it is a project called C2. The simulation has 1 billion neurons and 10 trillion synapses, more than a cat’s brain. Previous simulations had only as many neurons and synapses as a mouse’s brain. C2 will help researchers better understand how cognition works. But the simulation must be improved; it currently only captures 10-20% of the relevant information in the neurons it simulates. The project was funded through a US Government program, which aims to develop a chip capable of simulating 10 billion neurons connected by 1 trillion synapses that uses 1 kilowatt or less of electricity and takes up less than 2 liters in volume. The simulation runs on Dawn, a BlueGen/P supercomputer at a US national laboratory. However, it takes 500 seconds to simulate 5 seconds of brain activity and consumes 1.4 megawatts of electricity.
