Hemostatic for Blood Clotting
Researchers from a US university have formed a company to commercialize a chitosan-based platform to stop bleeding. The patent-pending technology is less expensive and more effective than current wound treatments. Chitosan is an amino-polysaccharide derived from chitin, a natural biopolymer found in the shells of crustaceans. Chitosan has a positive charge, while most biological cell surfaces are negatively charged, allowing the chitosan to adhere strongly to tissue. Chitosan also has anti-microbial properties. The researchers have also modified the chitosan with "nano-hooks" to create a reversible, Velcro-like adhesion between the chitosan and the tissue. The technology has applications in treatments for traumatic injuries in emergency situations and warfighter medical treatment.
