Lithium Ion Iron Sulfide Batteries
A British company has new lithium ion battery system which is cheaper and provides much greater stored energy density than typical lithium cobalt-based battery packs. It is greener than some lithium ion systems, and safer in case of overcharging. The new rechargeable lithium cells charge and discharge at rates similar to supercapacitors or ultracapacitors – ten times the rate of standard lithium ion cells. New high-capacity cells will offer a low-cost alternative to batteries for automotive applications.
