Sensitive Electronics Nose
German scientists have developed a new technology to detect individuals carrying explosives and track their progress. The technology involves a network of highly sensitive smell sensors that follow an explosive's trail. They use oscillating crystals on the sensor chips, and whenever the electronic noses capture chemical molecules, their oscillation frequency changes. The precise nature of the change is different for different substances. A further component in the system is a data fusion function, which traces the explosive's path and persistently searches out the carrier.
