TECHFIND - PROTECTION
Pro-Neck-Tor
Researchers at a Canadian university are designing a helmet that can better protect the spine from injury. Spinal injuries are most likely to occur when a person's head hits an object straight on. To try and convert impact that is flat to an angle, which reduces the likelihood of permanent injury, the researchers have developed the Pro-Neck-Tor helmet. The helmet is made up of an outer shell that resembles most helmets and an inner shell that fits tight to the head. The inner shell can rotate on impact, but a locking mechanism connects the outer and inner shells. In typical use the inner shell would be immobile. When hit, the inner shell would rotate in order to guide the head to an angular position with respect to the surface being hit. The researchers hope the result will not only help prevent brain injuries but spinal injuries. The researchers have received money to test the design as a next step toward commercialization.
