WiFi Energy Harvesting
A New York company has recently announced an energy harvesting system that can generate electricity from ambient WiFi. The company exhibited the new technology, called Airnergy Charger, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The device converts a WiFi signal at 2.4 GHz (802.11 signal) to a DC power that is stored in an internal battery. When the battery is depleted, the internal electronics initiate the energy harvesting process. The time required to charge the internal battery is dependent on the proximity of the device to a WiFi signal, but the company demonstrated charging a Blackberry from one-third capacity to full in approximately 90 minutes at CES. The Airnergy Charger is approximately the size of an iPod, but the company has plans to scale down the size to the size of an OEM battery. The system connects to external devices using a micro-USB. The initial version should be available sometime in third quarter 2010.
