TECHFIND - ROBOTICS
Commercial UAV
A French company that has recently introduced the AR.Drone. The system is an iPhone-controlled drone developed for the commercial market. Specifically for gaming applications, although the company is encouraging other applications by releasing a software development kit. The AR.Drone will be available later in 2010. The drone is a quadricopter made of carbon fiber and high resistance PA66 plastic. The device is controlled through WiFi and video cameras that streams imagery to the iPhone. One camera is on the underside of the drone and is connected to an inertial measurement unit (MEMS, 3 axis accelerometer, 2 axis gyroscope, and 1 axis yaw precision gyroscope) in order to measure speed, stationary flight, and to compensate for turbulence and wind. The second camera is on the front of the drone. This is the camera that streams video to the iPhone. The streaming video and MEMS devices allow for intuitive, easy to operate user interface. Parrot has also developed image processing software for augmented reality. The vehicle operates from lithium ion polymer batteries, which provide 15 minute endurance.
