Studying the Deformation of Nanocrystals
Researchers at a university Denmark have applied new, advanced equipment to demonstrate that materials which are used to make micro and nano components have different reactions which are based on the size of the crystal. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cooperating with research institutions in China and the USA, the researchers have studied the deformation of nanosize crystals from the metal titanium. During mechanical treatment, the size of the titanium crystals determines the behavior of the metal. The macroscopic deformation, a process called deformation twinning, is performed in a manner in which each atom systematically displaced in proportion to the neighboring atoms. As the crystals become smaller, they are harder to deform but this only extends to a certain lower limit. Once they are below one micrometer in size, they deform in the same way as large crystals which is known as "dislocation plasticity". This discovery will aid in determining nanocomponents for metal and ceramics to achieve a product with specific properties.
