Mismatched Alloys for Thermoelectric
Researchers from A US national laboratory in California have conducted computer modeling that shows that mismatched alloys have the potential to be useful in high performance thermoelectric devices. Using a supercomputer with parallel processing, the researchers identified that the introduction of oxygen impurities into highly mismatched alloys (semiconductors), the result is high performance thermoelectric characteristic without the traditional degradation in electric conductivity. The hybridization of electronic wave functions of alloy constituents allow for enhancing thermopower, which is unlike most conventional thermoelectric materials. Traditionally, thermoelectric materials do not have enhanced thermopower without a reduction in electrical conductivity.
