Interacting with Projected 3D Images

One of Apple’s latest patent applications is for a system that would allow users to interact with 3-D images floating in air.  The patent application describes a display system “that allows a user to interact with three-dimensional projected images that have been formed in mid-air”.  There are four parts to the system – display of the primary 3-D image, an optical system (with laser, mirrors, and lenses) to project a secondary image based on the first, a sensor system (IR and trilateration methods) to monitor and track user interactions with the projected image, and the supporting computer interface and control circuitry.  In terms of use cases, the application points to “environments as education, medical diagnostics, biomechanical engineering, etc.”
